In celebration of their 10th birthday, the Lan Su Chinese Garden offered 10 days of free admission, from January 2 – 11th, 2010. Normally, their admission price runs $8.50 for adults. This was our first time visiting this attraction, even though we have lived in the area five years now. As we entered, we were greeted by pleasant staff, who handed out pamphlets of the attraction. The garden is a block long peaceful haven located inside the busy city of Portland. The garden features Chinese flowers and trees. The grounds are an authentic historical Ming Dynasty type garden. The garden has many windows that allow the viewer to peer the beauty inside. The windows are said to, “Create the illusion of infinite space with a single city block.”

The patron is lead through intricate mosaic pathways, at whatever pace they see fit. The buildings are amazing representations of Chinese Architecture. The rooftops are topped with traditional Dragon fish, to protect the dwelling from evil.  The garden surrounds a manmade lake, which is home to many brightly colored fish.  Even with winter in full swing, the garden still had greenery to be seen everywhere. I imagine in the summer it is breath taking. It also has underwater rocks stacked to appear like a mountain. Throughout the garden there are many inscriptions including on the rocks.

The garden boasts that it is, “The most authentic Chinese Garden outside of China.” There is a tiny gift store located on the grounds, as well as, a tea house. A busy schedule of events is featured on the grounds. The garden is a perfect afternoon retreat for peace and serenity and lovers. The kids, however, were only entertained for maybe 45 min, by running through the pathways. The bathrooms are easily accessible. Parking is a bit more of a challenge as street parking must be used. Be careful to pay at the parking stations.  We hope our pictures make you feel like you went with us.
