The Crystal BallRoom, A Historical Gem

    By, Roxanne Ducusin

The Crystal Ballroom is located on West Burnside, in Portland Oregon. It is part of a 3 story McMenamin’s Pub and Brewery owned and operated facility. It is beauty, filled with whimsical artwork, historical architecture, chandeliers, and a long history.

Currently, the second-story brewery is a training facility for brewers. Originally, the building was the Crystal Ballroom's dance rehearsal studio. The legendary ballroom's was historically run by Lola Baldwin, a conservative policewoman who thru the Jazz Age kept booze and other vices out of the place. The building is scattered here and there with antiques from its historical era. One of the relics is a tank where the beer is stored, Ironic. There is plenty of current of local artwork on the ceilings, walls, doors, equipment and pipes.

The Crystal Ballroom has a floating dance floor that bounces with the beat, as the crowd gets their groove on. There is a constantly changing and wide range of venues. The place is diverse and has a long history, 90 years of live music and dancing. The hall has seen countless police raids, narrow escapes from fire, demolition, and neglect. It is now proudly listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Crystal Ballroom was a place to go during World War I, back in the day when Portland residents could be arrested for simply dancing the Tango. During the Great Depression, Mr. Watson Lovingly referred to as “Dad,” staged old-time dance revivals to raise people's spirits, and because of the segregation era, there were a few, but cherished African American formal dance, here.

There have been many changes and a lot of history in the Crystal Ballroom. Somehow, it seems it will continue to be ever changing with the times. If you have not been inside this breathtaking hall you need to go! There is so much to see and experience in this Portland historical building. Each of the 3 floors has its own history and fun to experience. The food and drinks are as diversified as the rest of the place, something for everyone. This is a definite thumbs up.
