It is hard to imagine amidst the hustle and bustle of South Beach Miami, that there could be a beautiful and almost private garden. Believe it or not, there is just such a place located in the heart of the city, on Convention Center Drive. Miami Beach Botanical Gardens is the perfect spot to meditate, enjoy the beautiful of nature, revel in a moment alone, be creative or even celebrate a small wedding. The gardens refer to themselves as an “Urban Greenspace In The Heart of South Beach.”
As you leave the parking lot, you are met by a large black gate that marks the garden's entrance. Admittance is free during their 9a.m. – 5p.m. Tuesday thru Sunday operating hours. The magic starts immediately upon entering, as you are greeted by gorgeous yellow flowers. The flowers in the garden are an explosion of color and a feast for the senses. The floral festival contained within seemed small, gorgeous, peaceful and occupied by very few patrons.
This beautiful garden has distinct areas that include: a South Florida Native Garden, a Bromeliad Garden, a Japanese Garden, a Great Lawn, A Grotto, a Heliconia Garden and more. There are delightful foot paths that can be taken, to wander this enchanting space. Trees, grass, a forest, rocks, a pagoda and a bridge stimulate add depth and texture. It even has a manmade lake is inhabited by large, brightly colored Koi.
The Garden offers a variety of different events and classes. Upcoming classes include: Environmental Education and Healthy Organic cooking. It has a small customer service desk that was staffed by a very friendly woman who graciously offered pamphlets and information on the specifics of the garden.
This amazing little retreat, is sparsely decorated with statues and sculptures that have been donated by the various artists who created them. Delicate and brightly colored, fluttering wings fill the Butterfly Garden. Various wildlife, such as birds and insects can be seen roaming the flora of the space. The garden even has a pet. There is a cat that lives in there who seems to be loved by all who enter. This much overlooked treasure, right in Miami offers a much needed break from city life.
